World Tendency’s level of light or darkness would cause certain events to happen as the tendency changed. And when played online, the actions of all players in aggregate affect the tendency, which can make the game unpredictable. But there is one small change that veteran Demon’s Souls players will welcome. Over the past decade (and especially since June), Demon’s Souls players have fantasized about a remake of the game, assembling wishlists of improvements. One highly requested feature that some Demon’s Souls fans were hoping for was a new region to explore.

There’s still an annoyingly common tendency to use a shove attack when I don’t mean to, and I wish the developers had done something to better explain World Tendency to newcomers. But those nitpicks notwithstanding, Bluepoint did an excellent job of updating Demon’s Souls to modern standards without changing the core of its gameplay.
One cool fact about this build is that it does not require any spells, yet it easily takes out waves of enemies. The build uses a two-handed weapon with Meat Cleaver and Insanity Catalyst in the primary slot and Talisman of Beasts and Iron Knuckles in the secondary slot. Sometimes you might be at a disadvantage if you don’t have a useful item from another region, but there’s really no rule as to which stages must be tackled in which order throughout the bulk of the game. After you clear the first few areas (the Tutorial and the first part of the Boletarian Palace region), you’ll be able to tackle most other stages in any order you like. I intend to create a Guts build in this game, to compliment the work I did in Dark Souls Remastered.
Then a death in Soul form would result in a game over, deleting the character and a full reset. The PlayStation 5 version launched with different modes to accommodate various displays and playstyles. For players more interested in the visuals and willing to trade a few frames for combat, the cinematic mode is perfect with a fixed 4K resolution and 30 FPS. Meanwhile, the performance mode can run the game smoothly at 60 FPS with 4K resolution. The DualSense controller is another example of how this remake further immerses the players while in combat.
In the original Demon’s Souls rolling was locked to only four directions which made it much more cumbersome. The remake of the game now gives players the modern rolling mechanics which help make the game feel less dated. The camera in Souls-like games is very important as the player should be able to read incoming attacks and respond accordingly.
While I was somewhat late to the PlayStation 5 party, as I only got mine back in February, I pretty much took to the Demon’s Souls remake straight away. I played the original game a great deal on the PlayStation 3, so I was fascinated to see how the remake would be handled. I even took time to stop and appreciate the fidelity of the flowing sewage in the game’s notoriously gross Valley of Defilement. This game does not suffer from any negative points in its kind, and if the only drawback of the main game was the animations and some graphics, now they have become the strength of the game. Demon’s Souls resurrects a game that could have easily become a historical footnote overshadowed by its more popular successors.

Gone are the days of the archaic multiplayer of the original game, as the remake has changed the online component for the better. This time around, players can connect with one another using a password system just like those used in Dark Souls Remastered and Dark Souls 3. Other weapons, armor, and shields appear to be items that are wielded by other enemies that are now available to get as drops. Maybe Bluepoint will work on adding even more items to the game in the future. You can also reduce the effectiveness of enemy armor and weapons, making even the most tank-like foes and bosses more manageable to face. In fact, the process of environmental storytelling that we have always seen in Souls titles.
